Why Do I Exercise Regularly???

Lately I have been asked, "How do you stay motivated & consistently exercise on a regular basis?"  This is easy for me to answer, but I think it may surprise you.  With all the fitness modeling I have done and w/ the recent World Bikini Championships I participated in, one may think that I am motivated by looking good.  That all this exercise thing is about having the perfect body, the right curves, & one that can be admired by all to see.

I can honestly say that 90% of the time as I walk in the gym or get the motivation to work out, it is not for those reasons.  Exercising has been one of the biggest healers for me and continues to be each day.  Moving my body, getting the blood flowing, finishing a rep, or running just a little more when my mind says quit, reaffirms to me that I can do hard things each day!  Life throws many challenges, but through exercise (movement) we begin to open our souls to self respect, to self-esteem, to self discovery.  I don't feel motivated every day to put on my shoes and go for a run or put on my clothes and do a weight training workout.  There are days that I would rather sit and do nothing, or finish the work project that is in front of me.  But there has never been a time that after I pryed myself from work or off the couch that I regretted doing so!  There are many reasons for me to keep my body moving and to stay motivated.

I recognize my increased energy when my little girl asks me to dance w/ her and I do.  I recognize it when I am hiking in the beautiful mountains and realize that I can climb that peak and see all the beauty from above.  I recognize it when I can shovel snow for my sick neighbor and still have enough energy to do my own.  I recognize it when I want to try something new and I have enough confidence in my bodies ability to try it.  I recognize it when I am feeling down/depressed and nothing, but submerging myself in movement can bring me peace and calm in the mind.  I recognize it when my daughter asks me to go on a bike ride w/ her and I can say, "sure."  I recognize it when I have had a late night taking care of sick kiddos, but I have enough energy to still conquer the day.  I am grateful every day that I have this body that provides me with so much joy and allows me to serve, to love, and to explore and experience the beauty that is around me!

I know that I will continue to enjoy and develop an even deeper respect for this beautiful body of mine...not for man, but for myself and for the many more wonderful experiences of health that I will get to partake in.  I challenge each one of us to move a little more.  To take 3 days a week to do some type of movement, whether that be yoga, pilates, walking, biking, running, trying the new fitness class at the gym, or going to the library and picking up a work out video and doing it!!  One thing I can promise, you will not regret doing so!

seeking out challenges

On Saturday I ran in the Wasatch back Marathon.   A relay marathon that runs along the ridge line of the wasatch mountains.  Of course the leg I ran was 11 miles climbing to the top.  "Why would you want to do that?", chids my mother.  "You are not as young as you used to be."  "what if you get hurt?"

What if I do?  Why would I want to put my body through agony for 11 miles?  It is an adequate question, but of course my answer is so much deeper than, "I just thought it would be a good idea."

I am not an advocate for marathons.  I am advocate for picking something challenging and doing it, even if others around you think you are crazy.  Pick something that is fun for you, pick something that you wouldn't normally do.

My experience running this race was something that hopefully stays in my heart forever!  I gained so much insight while pounding away on the dirt trails climbing the ridge line.  Each mile, or should I say stride, I would have to tell myself, "get to that next tree and then reevaluate how you feel."  Each time, I would feel like I wasn't just climbing, I was tackling everything in my life that is hard.  I was tackling all my goals that I have.  I was tackling the fears that lume in my mind.  Each stride was an affirmation that I can do hard things and keep on going.  On my journey to the top, at mile 13...there was my precious girls, cheering other runners on and giving out water.  As I climbed the hill to reach them, I was reminded again, that this isn't all about me.  It is about them.  What a great opportunity for them to encourage others in their goals, to give aid, and encouragement.  It was a chance for them to see their mom do hard things and to buoy me up.  They grabbed my hands and started to run beside me, eyes beaming and chanting, "you can do it mom!"

Once I reached the top, the views where so beautiful!! You could see the valleys below and the Timponoga peak ahead.  In that moment, I felt more close to intention than I had in a long time.  I was in a place of complete surrender.  My body was numb and my soul was humble.  I was able to feel that I have a plan here on earth, that we all do.  That we have been given such a great gift...the gift of life.

During hard times, challenges, or experiences, it is a chance for us to look at the tree ahead and say, "I will get to that tree."  and once you are there...build confidence and do it again.  Pick the next tree and the next until you have reached the top.  Challenges can humble the spirit and make us teachable.  If we are willing we can learn our most valuable lessons during that moment.  Remember along our journeys, we are never alone.  We may feel alone as we run along the dirty, rocky path, but a few miles ahead there is a water station and someone willing to give you aid.  These individuals are everywhere, ready to buoy us up and cheer us on.  If your head is down and your eyes are shut, you will miss them and the relief that they bring.

When I got home from the run.  This wonderful running mediation and teaching moment, I received a phone call from someone that I was waiting to hear from about a business partnership.  Mind you, this is a Saturday afternoon when I got this call.  Coincedence?  I don't think so.  I had put myself in nature, humbled my spirit and let my soul and mind meditate for hours.  I was so close to intention and right when I needed it, the helping hand to further my purpose in life had called and we worked out a business deal over the phone.  He even said, he had never done that before without meeting the person, but felt so differently about me and was willing to wrap up the deal!!!  Amazing and truely a gift.  A gift of knowledge that intention works and that seeking out challenges is one of the greatest ways we can feel zestful and more closer to our purpose!

One Fear Conquered

I have been focusing a lot on what my fears are and some of the things I do to self sabotage myself!  I have decided to do something that is so big for me.  I am entering into the WBFF World Championships in Toronto, Canada, in August!
Let me explain why I would choose this as something to face and not sky diving or something like that.  A couple of my fears are:  judgment from those that are close to me and being in the spot light to show all my insecurities and imperfections.

Being in a fitness competition hits on all my insecurities and will help me develop the skills and mindset, I believe will help me in my quest for my personal best.  For me being in a fitness competition is not about being on stage, strutting my assets in a string bikini.  It isn't about limiting myself from healthy foods and starving myself.  It isn't about becoming a diva.  This isn't about dehydration 2 days before the event and then pigging out after I compete w/ ice cream, burgers and shakes.

Doing the WBFF shows is one of the biggest shows out there.  The best of the best come!  I know this and I know that I will have to put in the work to show my face amongst these inspiring athletes.  To me this is like investing in an education.  An education of discipline, poise, conquering your fears, "stick to itness", and putting your intention out there and letting it go, no matter the outcome.

I will be honoring and respecting my body by eating healthy foods that build muscle...veggies, fruits, lean protein and proper grains..not high fructose corn syrup bars and protein shakes or starvation.  I will be eating healthy while some around me may wonder why I am eating this way and why won't I have just a little sliver of cake. I will be learning how to walk and hold myself in control when everything inside me will want to run off the stage. I will be wearing a bikini that will highlight my hard work and the beautiful bodies that our Heavenly Father gave us.  Wearing a bikini on stage, while walking in a way I've never walked, seems like one of the scariest things for me.  Once again that fear of judgment, fear of showing all my imperfections, or perhaps the fear of being great and letting my light shine for others? I will be using my power of intention to keep my mind in a positive state of mind and then letting it go and not holding on to a certain outcome.  All of this is the perfect formula for standing head to head w/ my fears.  I have put in for a few local shows to opt out at the last minute due to excuses.  Once again self sabotaging and using excuses as my way out.  How many of us in our lives have a huge dream, but we find a way to get around it or make an excuse of why it didn't come to fruition?  Any of these sound familiar?
I was so busy this summer.
My kids were sick.
 I hurt my knee
 I ran out of time
My in laws came to visit and I just had to entertain w/ cookies, white bread and of course I had to eat it. :)

I am ready to hit this head on and push the excuses out of my way.  I am ready to stand tall and make a committment and keep it, even if everything inside me says "No."  I am ready to be a light for others.  I am ready to go the extra mile and prove to myself first that Yes, I can do hard things.   I am ready to be an inspiration to others by letting my light shine and conquering my goals and by doing so, I then empower everyone around me to let their light shine!

I love the mission statement of the WBFF, it sums up how I feel.
"The desired public image of our company is to give athletes a venue in which they can compete, and be treated with the utmost professionalism. The key strategic influence is to promote health and fitness in a rapidly growing industry. Our target market is a health and fitness conscious individual who wants to embark on or develop a professional career within the health and fitness industry. Ultimately the WBFF seeks to raise a standard in bodybuilding, fitness, and modeling, and give athletes an unlimited opportunity. Our expectations are to promote our company, our athletes, and our sponsors to the best of our ability while becoming internationally known as a reputable and conscientious corporation."

I pray for your support, but even if I don't have it, I will succeed.  I pray for everyone today to do something that scares them.  I pray that we can use our minds to create a better tomorrow.  I pray we all can love ourselves as our Heavenly Father does.

Tibetan Strategy to Feel Great, Relax, and Reverse Aging

During this busy holiday season we are looking for peace, time savers, and rejuvenation. With the 5 Tibetan movements you get all three. Two thousand years ago, Tibetan monks claimed that the aging process could be reversed. They developed the Rites, by condensing 21 yoga exercises into 5. What would easily take a couple of hours to perform, could then be completed in 10-20 minutes. It was not uncommon for Tibetan monks to live to be 120 years of age, while still enjoying exceptional health!
Today many followers claim that this short 10 minute movement practice brings bliss, peace, and exceptional powers in life. For most of us during these busy holiday times, we could use a time saving work out that brings us added energy and bliss!
The 5 Tibetan rites can be done anywhere in a limited amount of space.
You want to work toward performing each of the movements 21 times. When you first begin, try to do 1 or 3 repetitions of each exercise. After a week, try to do 3 repetitions, then pause and try 3 more. You will certainly feel stronger in some of the movements than others. If you have trouble performing a complete set of 21, try to break it down into 3 sets of 7 repetitions with a pause between each set. Once you've achieved 21 repetitions of each exercise, you don't need to go on to more repetitions. These exercises are for restoring energy, not necessarily building strength. If you feel great after doing 21 repetitions of each movement, feel free to add another session later in the day to perform another set of 21 repetitions each.

Tibetan Rejuvenation Exercise Movement #1

Whirling. Having fun like a 3 year old
Rite 1: Stand upright, extend your arms at shoulder level away from your body and spin clockwise (if looking at a clock face on the floor). Keep your eyes looking directly in front of you, do not focus on any one point, let your vision blur as you spin. Turn up to 21 times or until you feel unstable or dizzy.
Breathing: breath in and out of your stomach. An opera singer, stage actor/actress or yogi experiences the benefit of breathing from this point of the body. When you stop spinning, breath even more deeply from your stomach until your head stops spinning and your balance returns to normal.
Tips and Recommendation: Speed is not so important, just try to spin 21 times and stop.

Tibetan Rejuvenation Exercise Movement #2

Leg Raises, Bending at the Waist, Tummy Tucks
Rite 2: Lay down on your back with your arms to your side, palms up, keep your legs straight, begin your inhalation, raise your legs off the ground until as high as possible and pick your head off the ground, bending your neck with your chin falling toward your chest. Begin your exhalation and return to laying flat on the ground. Repeat up to 21 times.
Breath In: Raising your legs and head
Breath Out: Lowering your legs and head
Tips and Recommendations: When starting out, bend your legs until your stomach strengthens. If your feel discomfort, place your hands (palms facing down) under your buttocks to support your lower spine. As you progress, straighten your legs and try to raise and lower them at the same speed. Once you have worked up to 21 repetitions, try to move at a nice steady rhythm without stopping.

Tibetan Rejuvenation Exercise Movement #3

Morning Neck Warm-up, Hotel Pillow Recovery Posture, Camel Asana in Yoga
Rite 3: Kneel with your legs together, arms extended, palms of your hands on the side of your thighs, drop your chin to your chest, begin your inhalation, raise your head and lean back, move your hands to the back of your thighs and let them drop lower and support your weight, crane your head and neck backward, relax your lower spine. Begin your exhalation, start to come forward back to kneeling position with your head back up in the straight position. Repeat up to 21 times.
Breath In: Going backward
Breath Out: Coming forward
Tips and Recommendations: When you start this exercise, use the weight of your head to come forward instead of forcing your chin to your chest with your muscles. When you lean back, avoid craning your neck, simply let it drop with its own weight. Eventually, you can bring your shoulder blades towards each other when you're in the back position. Keep a steady movement while going backward and forward. Keep your eyes open to maintain balance. Later, try the movement with your eyes closed to feel the difference and see if you can relax even more in the backward position.

Tibetan Rejuvenation Exercise Movement #4

Table Posture, Wrist warm-up and Neck agility
Rite 4: Sit on the floor, legs a little less than shoulder width apart, arms to your sides with hands extended flat on the ground and fingers pointed forward, drop your head toward your chest, begin your inhalation, raise your buttocks off the ground while bending your knees, shift your weight to your arms/hands and legs/feet, continue to raise your buttocks until your trunck and thighs are parallel to the ground, let your head fall back. Begin your exhalation and return to sitting position with your head dropped forward. Repeat up to 21 times.
Breath In: Raising off the ground
Breath Out: Returning back to sitting position
Tips and Recommendations: When you begin this exercise, just try to get from the starting to ending posture. It's easier to do it than read about it. In the beginning, you might not be used to your body weight on your wrists. Doing some wrist warm-ups before you begin can prevent discomfort. Once you have worked your way up to 21 repetitions, try to perform the movements without stopping.

Tibetan Rejuvenation Exercise Movement #5

Inverted-V, Yoga Cobra to Downward Dog
Rite 5: Get down on the floor on your hands and knees (in push-up position) with hands and legs a little less than shoulder width apart. Begin your inhalation, come up on your toes with weight in your arms, straighten your legs, arch your back, lean your head back, do not let any of your body touch the ground except for your toes and hands (Cobra in Yoga). Begin your exhalation, bend at the waist, bend your knees, push your buttocks up into the air, make an inverted V shape with your legs and arms straight, tuck your chin toward your chest (Downward Dog in Yoga), try to put your feet flat on the ground. Begin your next inhalation and repeat up to 21 times.
Breath In: Raising hips up into an ^ shape - downward dog.
Breath Out: Hips down & head coming up into cobra.
Tips and Recommendations: In the beginning, you will need to find where to place your hands and feet to make a complete inverted-V shape. You may do this exercise for years and never get your feet flat on the ground (a symptom of western living and always sitting in a chair). Once you've worked your way up to 21 repetitions, work on keeping a steady rhythm while going in and out of each position.

Finishing Posture Recommendation
After Exercise 5, lay flat on your stomach with your arms stretched out from side to side like Christ position. Keep your chin on the ground and close your eyes. Feel you heart pumping and blood circulating through your body. Wait until your hearth beat and breath returns to normal. Turn your head to one side and take a few deep breaths. Relax for 1 minute.
Danette's personal tip: While laying in the finishing pose, my body is warmed up and my mind is positive. This is when I take advantage of doing my positive visualization for the day.

Get Slim Without the Gym...3 minutes to flat ABS!

Most of us want to maximize our time when it comes to getting lean and fit. Part of the battle is finding time and money to get the body of our dreams. Either we run out of time to go to the gym or we don't have the resources to pay for the gym membership.

What if I told you there were four exercises that engaged every muscle group that you could do that required no equipment and would save you time and money!

These four exercises are called the ‘No Gym Workout.' These exercises encompass the use of your own body weight. Essentially your body becomes your machine which ultimately burns more calories and shapes all your major muscle groups creating a long lean sculpted body.

1. Plank w/ knee twist: Place your body in a plank form and then pull your knee to the opposite elbow, rotating on each side. 16 repetitions total.

Muscles engaged: core, transverse abdominals, deep pelvic floor muscles, shoulders, back, triceps, and obliques

2. One Leg squat w/ upper body extension: Standing on one foot, squat back through your glutes, and then power up through the heal of your foot. Once leg is straight extend forward. 10 on each leg

Muscles engaged: core, quadriceps, glutes, stability muscles, and increases cardiovascular output

3. Squat jumps reaching for the sky: Start squatting very low, then power up through your legs as your arms extend reaching for the sky. 15 total

Muscles engaged: Max calories burned, all leg muscles, core, arms

4. Plank w/ push-up/alternating arm extension: Push up, then reach arm straight for the sky, alternating on each side: 12 total

Muscles engaged: core, chest, abdominal muscles, shoulders, triceps, biceps, and rotator cuff.

Pilates Potion

Pilates is one of the most popular exercise systems in the country. It is an innovative system of mind-body exercise evolved from the principles of Joseph Pilates.

Pilates dramatically transforms the way your body looks, feels and performs. It builds strength without excess bulk, creating a sleek, toned body with slender thighs and a flat abdomen.

It teaches body awareness, good posture and easy, graceful movement. Pilates improves flexibility, agility and economy of motion. It can even help alleviate back pain.

Professional dancers have known the benefits of Pilates for decades. Top athletes use it for strength, flexibility, and injury prevention. Hollywood celebrities and supermodels use it to maintain beautiful physiques.

Core strength is the foundation of Pilates exercise. The core muscles are the deep, internal muscles of the abdomen and back. When the core muscles are strong and doing their job, as they are trained to do in Pilates, they work in tandem with the more superficial muscles of the trunk to support the spine and movement.

As you develop your core strength you develop stability throughout your entire torso. This is one of the ways Pilates helps people overcome back pain. As the trunk is properly stabilized, pressure on the back is relieved and the body is able to move freely and efficiently.

A miracle? Not really. Pilates is a safe, sensible exercise system using a floor mat or equipment, that will help you look and feel your very best. No matter what your age or condition, it will work for you. Here are 5 effective moves that will help you slim down in your midsection and help with lower back pain.
1. Half roll back: feet placed on floor, pull in your midsection, create a C curve with your spine and roll back until your feet want to leave the floor, gently roll back up)
2. Half roll back w/ oblique twist: roll back and then maintain position as you extend your hand back, repeat on other side.

3. Roll up: body flat, gently roll up, sucking in midsection and reach over toes. Gently roll down, laying your spine down vertebra by vertebra.
4. Roll over: Reach your legs over your head, then gently place them down using your abdominal muscles.
5. Plank w/ knee extension: elbows down, body in plank position, hold abdominals in towards spine. Pull your knee in towards your elbow. Repeat on other side.

Spring Clean & Detox Your Body

For Ways To Detox Your Body

There are a few simple steps we can all make that will detox our bodies, jump start our metabolisms, and help us feeling refreshed and ready to conquer our fitness and health goals.

1. Sweat at least once a day for a week. Go for a run, take a spin class, stretch in the steam room, and dance around your house until your body starts to sweat. Sweating helps clear clogged pores and eliminate toxins. It may also feel good and help start a new habit!

2. Eliminate white sugar from your diet for one week. White sugar (sucrose) is one of the most toxic chemicals in the body and it is also one of the most addicting. When you find that your body is constantly craving sweet food, you know you need a cleanse. Sugar is inflammatory in the body and decreases elasticity in the skin and drains your energy. Remove sugar for one week and you will see a more youthful appearance and renewed energy. Good tip: Throw out or give away all sweets in your home and in your drawers at work.

3. DRINK WATER! Most of us do not get enough water as it is. Make it a reminder to get enough each day for one week. Drink 64 oz. or more each day. Water helps eliminate toxins and flush out the inside of your body. I like to think that sweating and drinking water each day is like taking a bath for your insides. Most of us do not like to go more than one day without a shower. Our internal bodies do not like to go without an internal bath of exercise (sweating) and drinking water for more than one day as well. Good tip: Place a 32 oz water bottle in places you are going to be throughout the day. Tell yourself you have to drink at least half before you can go to the next spot. Refill bottles for the next day.

4. Do a daily scrub. As our bodies try to detox due to eliminating sugar, sweating, and drinking water it will eliminate out through the body via our skin. Scrub your skin each night in the shower with a shower scrub and then do a nice sesame oil rub after. While applying the sesame oil, rub in a circular motion around joints and the abdomen area. This will hydrate the skin and help you feel refreshed and renewed. This is an Ayurvedic tradition that has had years of success in healing fibromyalgia, arthritis, and aids in renewed energy.

Does Drinking Diet Drinks really give you energy and help you loose weight?

With claims like "don't waste your work out," "healthy sustained energy," and the promise of a "shake for breakfast and lunch with a sensible dinner will help you loose weight," what diet drink do you choose?
The question to be asked is: Do these diet drinks (EAS, Slim Fast, Atkins, and Muscle Milk) do what they claim? Do they give you sustained energy all while helping you loose weight?
Studies conducted by the Mayo Clinic state that manufacturers of protein shakes may claim that their products decrease body fat or promote weight loss. But there is no evidence that this is true. Eating a source of protein as part of a meal or snack is a good idea. You'll likely feel satisfied longer, which means you're likely to consume fewer calories overall. Occasionally having a protein shake with added vitamins and minerals as a meal supplement is better than skipping a meal. However, these types of shakes — even if the labels shows added nutrients — do not replace all of the benefits of whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables.

Also, the down fall of these drinks is that nutritional supplements can be marketed without FDA approval of safety or effectiveness. Athletes who choose to ingest these supplements should be concerned with the safety of long-term use. They are low-nutrient, low-fiber, highly-processed, high-calorie "foods," whose consumption reduces the phytochemical density of your diet.

The diet drinks studied contain large amounts of protein. Ingesting more protein than your body needs is not a small matter. It ages you prematurely and can cause significant harm. The excess protein you do not use is not stored by your body as protein; it is converted to fat or eliminated via the kidneys. Eliminating excess nitrogen via your urine leaches calcium and other minerals from your bones and breeds kidney stones
Bottom Line:
By not consuming diet drinks you are saving money, saving your health by eating real foods versus processed foods, and you may cut back on fat/ meal. So if you are going for weight loss and increased energy there are better alternatives. Instead of purchasing a drink, grab a precut fruit bowl, a yogurt, string cheese and an apple, or grab a grilled chicken breast from the deli.

Balance Training

Personal Trainer Danette Allen breaks down balance training.

Balance training has become a huge hit when everyone realized that it is not only for athletes, but for regular people looking to improve their stabilization, core muscles, weight loss goals, and overall health goals.
There has been a lot of success training individuals incorporating balance. It not only helps slim you down through the midsection, by tightening your core, but helps with the prevention of injuries by making you more stable and less likely to fall or twist wrong, breaking a hip or injuring your lower back.
A few exercises to start incorporating into your work out routine are:

Easy (Beginner): One leg toe touch w/ arm raise
Medium (Intermediate): One leg balance- leg swing
Hard (Advanced): Jump step w/ one leg balance

How to Be More Consistent

Constant Like the Ocean Waves

The waves are always changing yet they are constant. They flow with power and ease. Is it possible to be dynamic and everchanging yet be stable even in today's crazy world?

YES YOU CAN! Yes you can be constant like ocean waves to consistently set and persistently reach your health and fitness goals in body heart mind and soul. YES YOU CAN stay motivated all the time.

How????

Well, before this can happen, you need to get real with yourself and genuinely ask yourself two important questions: 1) Is it worth it to me? 2) Can I do it? If you can answer yes to both those questions, you are nearly there.

If it is NOT worth it to...don't waste any more of your time or anyone elses time in pursuit of the goal or endeavor.

If you think you can do it but are just not sure how, that is okay, there is plenty of help available to you. You are powerful beyond measure, even if you slightly believe a way is possible your consious and subconsious mind will help figure out a way to make it happen. People and things will seem to magically appear into your life to help you get clarity on exactly how you can do it.

If you genuinely think your goal is valuable and believe you can somehow do it, YOU CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN! If you want our assistance, we are happy to help help you find a way to get there.  Let us know how we can help you with your specific situation.

So what does and does not help in motivating you?

According to Napoleon Hill, much of what we do is motivated by our feelings. Since our feelings can lift us to great achievements or hurl us down to defeat, we owe it to ourselves to understand and control them. Here are 14 emotions that are like letters of the alphabet with which you write your plan for success or failure. The seven negative emotions: Fear, Hatred, Anger, Greed, Jealousy, Revenge, or Superstition. The seven positive emotions: Love, Sex, Hope, Faith, Sympathy, Optimism, or Loyalty.

They can be combined meaningfully or chaotically. These emotions are nothing but reflections of your mental attitude, which you can organize, guide, and completely command. If you do not take this control, you are condeming yourself to an entire life buffeted by the winds of emotional whim. So here in these few words of wisdom is a secret of how to be constant like the ocean waves and extreemly motivated to succeed--emotional control via your mental attitude.

One idea to help with this is to track your emotions daily for one week. You may be surprised at the results. Make a note of circumstances which inspire the emotions. Notice when you experience and act on an emotion. You will gain insights to the frequency and power of your emotions. Once you know what forces trigger your emotions you can act to eliminate them or seek them out to use them.
